Each month, Glass’s Commercial Vehicle editors hold a meeting to name the current Used Van Hero in the UK market – the model they believe offers the highest level of versatility, durability and outstanding value for money.

Andy Picton, Chief Commercial Vehicle Editor: “For those who want a stylish and economical small van with a great level of equipment, the Berlingo Enterprise is right up there. The Citroen Berlingo 625 Enterprise is currently the best-selling van at auction with clean examples eagerly sought after”

WHEN WAS IT ON SALE

The Citroen Berlingo launched in 1996, with the third generation reaching UK roads during Q4 2018. The Used Van Hero for this month formed part of the second-generation Berlingo range available from 2008, with the highest specification Enterprise version joining the X and LX models in 2010.

WHY

In the UK, the Citroen Berlingo is a hugely important small van and one of the biggest selling models in Europe alongside its sibling the Peugeot Partner and rivals like the Renault Kangoo and Ford Transit Connect. Based on the LX trim, Berlingo Enterprise models came with additional standard specification including Bluetooth, air conditioning, reverse-parking sensors and satellite navigation. From October 2010, emissions from the 1.6HDi 75bhp and 90bhp diesel models fuel consumption improved 1.7% with CO2 emissions decreasing by 6g/km.

WHAT’S GOOD

The Berlingo is a robust and stylish van with a good level of comfort and specification for such a small vehicle. Available in two lengths with both sharing the same 2,728mm wheelbase. The L1 variant is 4,380mm long whilst the L2 gains an additional 248mm in length, making it a popular crew van. Payloads range from 625kg to 850kg, with the diesel engines returning on average 55mpg. Replacement parts for the Berlingo are sensibly priced making cost of ownership competitive.

WHAT’S NOT SO GOOD

Check the gears engage cleanly and the power steering works properly. If the van has been towing, check wear on the rear shocks and springs. Also worth a check are the side loading doors, known to jam on some second-generation Berlingos.
